Transparent tissue can erase an outline, while red or black skin can make an animal nearly invisible after red wavelengths have been absorbed by seawater.
Bioluminescence can function as a lure, warning, decoy, searchlight, counter-illumination system, or signal to another member of the species.
Scarce food favors oversized feeding equipment
A large mouth, long teeth, hinged jaws, or an expandable stomach lets an animal accept a meal when one finally appears. The anglerfish's lure is an energy strategy as much as a hunting trick: bring prey close instead of swimming through darkness searching for it.
These traits are not universal. Many deep-sea animals are small, delicate filter feeders, scavengers, or gelatinous drifters rather than dramatic predators.
Soft bodies can be an advantage under pressure
Pressure is especially damaging to compressible gas spaces. Many deep-sea animals are mostly water and lack lungs or large gas-filled swim bladders, so their bodies are less crushable than a human body or an air-filled machine.
The result can be a soft, gelatinous form that looks fragile at the surface but is mechanically appropriate at depth.
