Transparency reduces the shadow and outline of an animal in open water. Where there is little structure to hide behind, clear tissues can make a creature harder for predators and prey to detect from multiple directions.
Open water has nowhere to hide
Midwater animals cannot shelter behind rocks, plants or the seafloor. A visible outline against downwelling light can reveal them to a predator below or prey above.
Clear, watery tissue allows more light to pass through instead of reflecting a strong silhouette.
Transparency is easier for some tissues than others
Gelatinous animals can be almost entirely clear because their bodies contain large amounts of water and relatively little light-absorbing material. Muscles, eyes, digestive organs and pigments are harder to hide.
Some species conceal those opaque parts with mirrors, red pigment, compact organs or special positioning.
The barreleye uses transparency as a window, not whole-body camouflage
The barreleye fish has a transparent, fluid-filled shield over its tubular eyes. MBARI observations showed that the eyes can rotate as the fish changes from looking upward to feeding forward.
The shield protects the eyes while preserving a clear field of view around stinging gelatinous animals.
Transparency has limits
At greater depths where sunlight is absent, being clear may offer less advantage than being red or black. Bioluminescent flashes can also reveal internal organs if they are not shielded.
That is why transparency often appears alongside other strategies rather than replacing them.
